The statute also covers individuals who construct, repair, maintain and alter ships, so long as the work is being done on the waterfront. Certain workers engaged in construction along waterways are covered as well as employees on oil rigs. Under the Defense Base Act, the Longshore system is also used to provide benefits for civilian workers on a military base. Only civilians in the employment of a private contractor are covered by this act. The Longshore and Harborworkers Act states that
“The employer shall furnish such medical, surgical, and other attendance or treatment, nurse and hospital service, medicine, crutches, and apparatus, for such period as the nature of the injury or process of recovery requires.” However, the charges for medical treatment must be both reasonable and necessary for the Employer to be responsible for payment. Mileage reimbursement to and from the doctor is also recoverable directly to the injured worker under the Longshore and Harbor Workers Compensation Act. The decision to seek legal representation often involves the cost/benefit issue of having a lawyer involved with dispute resolution. Unlike most workers compensation statutes, the Longshore  and Harbor Workers' Act allows the attorney who successfully prosecutes a claim on behalf of an injured harbor worker, stevadore, etc. to assess attorney fees and costs against the Employer, in addition to the benefits owed to the injured worker. Lawyers who represent injured workers under the Longshore and Harborworkers Act do not claim a percentage of the benefits paid to their clients.  Our attorneys are experienced in representing Longshoremen in claims throughout District 6 and all districts in the United States.  Our lawyers represent clients injured at Port Everglades, Port of Palm Beach, Port of Miami, Port of Jacksonville, Port of Apalachicola, Jaxport cruise Terminal, Port of Jacksonville, Jaxport, Port of Palm Beach, Pt.
